Saturday night brought a concert into our very own upstairs kitchen! What a magnificient evening to behold, four sonic adventurers converging under the colorful lights and sending us all into an other-worldly trance. Here for your listening pleasure are the evening’s proceedings:

The Politics of Sledding

December 30, 2008

Following our total outrage at the fact that sledding is no longer permissible at Bowdoin Park, where we’ve gone for 25 years, we collected ourselves and sought our fortunes elsewhere… Here are some highlights from Mt. Alvernia, a Franciscan retreat in Wappingers where the Brothers are obviously not immune to winter fun. Thanks to the Franciscan Brothers of Mt. Alvernia for putting the “win” back in winter. An added note, I have written a letter to the Dutchess County Parks Department regarding the Anti-Sledding situation at Bowdoin, and will update as I learn more. Thusfar we were told that it has to do with a lawsuit…

WVKR 91.3 FM, Poughkeepsie

December 18, 2008

When I was a teenager, I gratefully embraced the fact that I was obsessed with music. At about the same time, I discovered Poughkeepsie’s own Vassar College Radio, 91.3 WVKR. I listened with an almost religious attention to detail that would carry over into my adulthood. I learned many things about the world of independent music from WVKR, and always felt a kind of gratitude toward the existence of such a cultural and aesthetic enclave in our relatively bucolic, homogeneous corner of the world.

Here’s a screenprint I found in the archives. I went to this show when I was 16, going on 17:

wvkr-1994

I went forth from the Hudson Valley to live in big towns and cities, digging into various scenes and music currents and histories. And now, in a small but potent “full circle” situation, I’m gonna be a DJ on WVKR. I am again feeling very grateful that I will be able to share my devotion to music, and music independence, with a wider audience. Here’s a photo of the WVKR studio I took last night while a nice young man named Paul was showing me how to work all this stuff.

wvkr-studio

My show’s gonna be called Tinkertronics and it’ll focus on new and various styles of electronic music. For now it’ll air Sundays 10-Midnight, but that’ll change once the students come back from winter break. You can listen online at wvkr.org if you like, and call and say hello too! Stay tuned.

Wiccopee Ice Forest

December 15, 2008

Much has been made in the news about the Ice Storm that has hit the northeastern USA, causing thousands of households to lose power and heat, many for nearly a week now. While driving the other day, I saw that the top of Mount Beacon was covered in what looked like a sheet of ice. It looked crazy, and I really wanted to investigate this apparent Ice Forest.

Nearby to Hopewell Junction, there is a woodsy mountain village/hamlet of sorts called Wiccopee, NY. My school bus used to travel back there when I was young. Even at the age of six, I gathered that there was something special about the place.

More recently, brother Peter introduced me to an area in Wiccopee called Flat Rock, which is a multi-use parkland area with trails (including the Appalachian Trail). We took a little hike up there on Saturday afternoon, and all of a sudden we were in the Ice Forest.

Northern Cardinal

December 12, 2008

Male Northern Cardinal in the front yard this morning.

cardinal-small1

My Mom and Dad celebrate their birthdays two days apart, on the 7th and the 9th. Pops turned 60 this year, !arriba! There was much cooking and baking going on, for example:

Vegetarian 3-Bean Chili

1 tbsp. Olive Oil

1 small yellow onion, finely diced

1/2 green (or red, or yellow) bell pepper, finely diced

15 oz. can black beans, drained and rinsed

15 oz. can great northern beans, drained and rinsed

15 oz. can diced tomatoes

1/2 cup stock or water

3 tbsp. chili powder

1 tsp. ground cumin

1 tsp. paprika

cayenne pepper to taste

1 tsp. coarse salt

Set a large, heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat and add olive oil. Once it’s hot, add the onions and peppers and sautee until onions turn translucent and edges begin to brown.

Add all the other ingredients and reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer as long as possible (20 minutes at least, I think I simmered it for like 50), stirring occasionally. Can be served topped with shredded jack and/or cheddar!

and with chili, comes

Cornbread

4 tbsp. butter

1 1/2 cups medium grind cornmeal

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1 1/2 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. salt

1/4 to 1/2 cup sugar

2 eggs

1 1/4 cups milk, more if needed

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Put butter in an 8-inch square baking pan. Place pan in oven.
  • Meanwhile, combine dry ingredients in a bowl. Mix eggs into milk, then stir this mixture into dry ingredients, combining with a few swift strokes. If mixture seems dry, add another tablespoon or two of milk.
  • When butter and oven are hot, remove pan from oven, pour batter into it and smooth out top.  Return pan to oven. Bake about 30 minutes, until top is lightly browned and sides have pulled away from pan; a toothpick inserted into center will come out clean. Serve hot or warm.

Stay tuned for the double-layer carrot cake recipe.

Running

December 1, 2008

A lovely morning today, in the low 50’s. Just when you think the weather has gone South, you get a nice sunny day.

I took the opportunity to run my longest distance since returning to Hopewell in August. It rained all night last night, and the morning had this rain-scrubbed clarity to it. I passed a gaggle of geese sitting by the bank of the pond, and crows everywhere.

I bought a GPS watch for myself for my birthday a while back, and, although a bit of an impulse purchase, it’s actually pretty great for clocking distance, pace and time. Plus it saves every run you ever did, so you can compare times and paces, if you’re into that sort of thing. Here are the results of my run from this morning:

Baked Mac and Cheese

Stone Junction

November 30, 2008

sunday-november-30-20081

Re-reading Stone Junction for the first time in several years. It’s like a jolt of west-coast, anarchist/outlaw inspiration, just as the weather is turning grey and somewhat forbidding here in Hopewell Junction.

Shot a few short videos of the first snowfall of the season this morning, rendered slightly overdramatic by a music clip I made the other night:
